Bible Study Group Report
Perhaps a primary question is “Why have a Bible Study Group in our Church?”. The answer is that that there are a variety of reasons. For example, many folk intuitively know that the Bible is as important for daily living as it is for life and mission of the Kirk. They want to explore and discover something of its significance and to do so in a less formal setting than that which prevails on Sunday mornings. Others want to be reminded of the great themes and characters in the scriptures, stories which they have heard since far off Sunday School days and yet which still ‘speak’ to their lives today. And, importantly, there are those who come to Bible study because they find friendship and comfort meeting with others engaged in exploring God’s word..
This group is now in its second year of meeting. The first series of studies were based on a video presentation by American author Philip Yancey
on the topic of “Grace”. As ever, when the Bible is explored and people are open to receive its message, there were both comforts and challenges. It was comforting to be reminded that God loves and forgives sinners by His “Amazing Grace” gifted in Jesus Christ. The challenging bit, which Philip Yancey strongly emphasised, was for us as Christians to be similarily gracious and forgiving. In fact he even went so far as to suggest that, sadly, for many folk today the church can be a very ungracious, and unforgiving place.
In more recent days the group has taken up a study of Mark’s gospel. We start with a short time of singing popular choruses or hymns. These are chosen as requested by members of the group and while the regular Church choir need have no qualms about their future the group certainly makes a joyful noise. So if anyone reading this wants to join in, wants to share some insight or to feel a little more confident about the One in whom they believe and whose they are, then please don’t be shy. New members will always find a warm welcome. Why not
